A good piece of data visualisation work required ASK, which represents accurate, story and knowledge, and of course, design is of vital importance of an art piece. Data visualisation is communication between data, audience and designer.

The brief of data visualisation is to collect data, analyse and find out the story the audiences interested or we want to tell, then come up with a solution and show it in the exhibition.

As a good piece of  exhibitory data visualisation, beside ASK and design, the way we communicated are limited, it has to be eyes-catching. Among all of the works, I would give group 1 the highest marks.

Their project shown a collection of data took place on Thursday 2nd March 2017, on the board, it illustrated the train from winchester to London waterloo, Portsmonth, Newcastle, Manchester Piccadilly and the time the train delayed.

They didn’t choose the method of barchart or piechart but using colour strings and nails to make a map-like board to tell the story. The data are accurated, the design looks really impressed and eyes-catching. One thing I like the most is that they tried to take the data to a bigger theme, they compared the delay times of train in United Kingdom with France’s and Germany’s.

Surprisingly, britain train won the champion that, averagely train time delays in United Kingdom is the least in one day.

You may have a question in your mind, what is the story they are trying to tell?

They assumed that passengers are the factors why the train delayed. Except for the board, they also made an animation which illustrated the speed of different passengers.

Even though the animation and the graph look impressed and great, it is hard to see the story they are trying to tell just by looking at the data itself. Without the information tag, the animation is confusing, and can’t really see the relations between train delays and the walking speed of passengers.

Therefore, I like the whole piece of works, espeically the board, however, the animation is really confusing.

Group 4’s graphs look attractive including the use of colour and diversity of graphs types.

Among the graphs, I can see the efforts they tried to collect the data about the one way system in Winchester. Also, they tried to interact with audiences by asking them Yes/No question, and encouraging them to write down their comments.

However, even though the data is accurated, there are too much information, the knowledge is too wide, thus, I can’t see what story they are trying to tell.

To improve the art piece, I think they should choose one or two intersting data to work on, and think clearly what story they is worthwhile to tell or the audience might be interested in. One way system is what citizens in Winchester will pass through everyday, encouraging them to give comments, helping to improve the one-way system is an effective idea, but they may need to refine their questions, such as “Do you like one-way road?” to “Do you choose to walk rather than drive due to one-way road?”.

I think the overall of the works look professional and good looking. However, the whole exhibition doesn’t look like a professional and proper one comparing with fashion design’s. Firstly, the venue is not proper that it is not a formal and right choice of exhibition venue. Secondly, the exhibition is not organizing, except for the first day, some computers were not even sign in, means the videos and animations were not being played. Lastly, I think we should create a theme for the whole exhibition, let say the theme is “Data visualisation”, we should place this name in each of the design work, also the information tag should be in same format.

Personally, I think it is a good experiences.
